“Tell Me”
The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung cordially invites you to the screening of “Tell me”, a documentary directed by the Greek director Nikos Megrelis, co-written with Greek photographer Renee Revah.
At the core of the story lies the personal quest of Renee Revah to reconstruct the journey of her family-Greek Jews from Thessaloniki – who were deported to Auschwitz Birkenau and never returned. Revah engages in an imagined dialogue with her grandfather – the only surviving member of the family, having found refuge in Athens – who never overcame the loss of his loved ones in the Holocaust. Through this epistolary relationship, the film explores the concept of intergenerational trauma: the silent transmission of memory and grief from one generation to the next.
As stated by Nikos Megrelis, the documentary approaches memory as an act of resistance. The film is not only about the Holocaust itself, but above all about its aftermath: the silence, the loss, and the identity that is shaped around an unnamed trauma. At the same time, it serves as a warning that, if we become complacent, we risk entering an era in which democratic rights, freedom of expression, and even the fundamental right to life may once again come under threat. Shootings took place in Athens, Thessaloniki and Auschwitz Birkenau.
Conversation and Q & A:
Following the screening, Nikos Megrelis, director of the documentary, will be in conversation with Lola Angel from Athens, who survived Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the age of 6. Mrs. Angel is portrayed in the film.
The documentary is in Greek with German subtitles and the discussion will take place in English.
A small reception will take place at the end of the documentary screening.
