Development policy debate 2020 - III
From being left behind to becoming agents of change in a global pandemic: The potential of indigenous peoples' knowledge in managing disasters
The coronavirus pandemic confronts the international community with unprecedented challenges. National health systems and economies of affected countries are collapsing and governments, especially in the Global North, recently adopted aid packages worth billions of euros to support their citizens. As the pandemic reaches new corners of the globe, its impacts are cascading on already existing conflicts and recurrent environmental disasters. That is why international development cooperation is feverishly looking for ways to deal with potential catastrophic conditions and their massive social and economic impacts on fragile states.
For centuries, indigenous communities have adapted to negative external influences that had and still have a strong impact on their livelihoods. They are therefore experts of change and resilience. In this virtual panel discussion, we will discuss with representatives of indigenous communities which strategies for preventing and dealing with crises could be appropriate and successful and how international development cooperation as well as national governments can implement such strategies to save lives.
Online panel discussion with:
- Joan Carling, Convener, Indigeneous Peoples Major Group on the Sustainable Development Goals
- Fiore Longo, Research and Advocacy Officer, Survival International
