"Further and Further away"

Short film and expert discussion with filmmakers Polen Ly and Daniel Mattes from Cambodia

Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung invite you to an online screening of the short film "Further and Further Away", which will premiere at Berlinale. In his short fiction, Cambodian director Polen Ly tells the story of a brother and sister who belong to the Bunong ethnic minority in Cambodia. After their family's village in rural Cambodia was evicted due to the construction of a hydroelectric dam, they spend one last day there before they move to Phnom Penh in search of a more prosperous life.

Hydropower projects are the main cause of extreme water insecurity along the Mekong River in Cambodia. Water has become scarce in important agricultural areas and has put rice production at risk. Human encroachment on watercourses also leads to declining fish stocks, which are an important source of income for nearly half of Cambodia's population. Thousands of people have been resettled for the construction of hydropower plants, subsequently lost their livelihoods and often have received inadequate compensation.

We would like to discuss these and other topics with director Polen Ly and producer Daniel Mattes after the film.

The event will take place on Zoom. You will receive the access link after registering for the event.

The film is in Bunong and Khmer with English subtitles, the discussion will be in English.
