Global Repercussions: How a Second Trump Administration Will Impact Democratic Civil Societies

The second inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2025, will mark the beginning of a new era of authoritarianism in the United States--with repercussions around the world. The new US administration has signaled that it will align itself with authoritarian regimes worldwide. It has promised a steady rollback of civil liberties at home, targeting women, immigrants, LGBTQ and minority populations. These policies will serve as a blueprint and create incentives for illiberal governments elsewhere. The administration’s strong support for fossil fuel production will undermine international efforts to tackle climate change, while making climate activism more difficult. With the growing political alignment between global right-wing movements and American tech leaders, chief among them Elon Musk, digital platforms will increasingly propagate right-wing narratives and promote anti-democratic politicians, further putting critical independent media, fair elections, and fact-based public discourse at risk.

In this conversation, just days after the inauguration, we will hear voices from the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s global network. We will explore what impact a second Trump Administration will have on these respective countries and regions, in particular on green issues and democratic resilience, how civil societies intend to push back, as well as what communities in the US can learn from these other contexts.
