Gold rush on the African Continent
Goldmining has a long tradition in the gold-producing areas of the African continent. But it is only since the colonial rule that mining and the extraction of the precious metal started on an unprecedented scale and pace. Up to this day, the rush for gold continues unabated.
Two films from different regions highlight the interests of mining companies and tell the stories of miners and their families as well as of affected communities by gold extraction is carried out. A story of wealth, privilege and power on one side and exploitation and destruction on the other.
In cooperation with the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation, AFRIKAMERA will present a special program on the history and implications of gold mining in Western and Southern Africa. Screening for the first time in Europe, the shattering documentary DYING FOR GOLD by Catherine Meyburgh and Richard Pakleppa address the 120-year history of gold mining and the ongoing effects of the associated racist-capitalist exploitation practices in South Africa. The Burkinabe director Michel K. Zongo captures through the documentary PAS D’OR POUR KALSAKA the consequences of the exploitation of gold from the perspective of the inhabitants of the village of Kalsaka.
Discussion
Following the two screenings, the director Michel K. Zongo (Burkina Fasso) and expert on gender and extractive economies Dr Asanda Benya (University of Cape Town, South Africa) will discuss the background, consequences and political demands in the context of gold exploitation.
