Organic Farming

The Sustainable Future of the CAP

Organic farming contributes actively to sustainable agriculture. Its principles and cultivation methods, such as area-based animal husbandry and rotations with a wide range of crops, conserve water and soil, promote animal welfare, enhance favourable conditions for wild herbs, insects, birds and wild animals, which contribute to protecting biodiversity.

The increasing consumer demand for organic products shows that consumers are rewarding this nature-conserving and animal-friendly way of farming. By growing these products in Europe, it is possible to avoid climate-damaging transportation, maintain and promote the small- und medium-sized structure of agricultural businesses and expand the range of
organic food in communal catering services.

Therefore, the expansion of organic farming to at least 20 percent of the cultivated area is the goal of both the government of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the German Government. Society has to reward the public environmental performance of this cultivation method sufficiently.

How can the design of the new CAP ensure the financing of the expansion? The Commission‘s proposals point to a number of different approaches. The aim of the event is to discuss various financing options how the CAP can strengthen organic agriculture and safely finance its expansion to at least 20 percent of the cultivated area.
