The Red-Dead Sea Canal - Implications for Palestine
The pipes of the Rad Sea-Dead Sea Condiut, more commonly called Red-Dead Sea Canal, are planned to run from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Dead Sea. The project is intended to bring sea water to stabilize the Dead Sea water level, while supplying dringing water, and producting hydroelectric power. In October 2013, a coalition of Palestinian environmental NGOs released a statement criticizing the plan, sprecifically decrying potential environmental impacts, disregard of Palestinian water rights, and a lack of transparency.
What are the main points of criticism and how are they addressed? We aim to discuss these questions with experts and practitioners who have deep insights into the planning of the project and the surrounding discussions.
After a welcom by Dr. René Wildangel, director of hbs Ramallah, our guests will give input on the different angles of the discrussion, focusomg pm emvironmental issues, the legal framework, as well as the status of the project within the PA's national planning, followed by time for questions and debate.
