The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) cordially invite you to the launch of the Plastic Atlas 2019 that will be hosted by the office of MEP Bas Eickhout on 5 November 2019 in the European Parliament. With 19 chapters and more than 45 infographics, the Atlas illustrates various aspects of the plastic crisis and showcases solutions for a world free of plastic pollution.

As 99 per cent of all plastics are made from fossil resources like oil, gas and coal, the emissions along its whole value chain are highly damaging to our climate. The EU is a leader in exporting plastic waste to Asia and other parts of the world – shifting both blame and responsibility to countries that have little capacity to deal with this growing environmental and health crisis. Without significant measures to drastically reduce its plastic production and use, the EU would not be able to fulfill its Paris climate commitments and perform as a global climate leader.

What are the impacts of plastic on the environment, human health and communities and who are the drivers and interests behind the plastic crisis? What is the most effective way to reduce plastic pollution? How can the European Parliament and the European Commission build on existing regulation to ensure that Europe becomes a global leader and champion for a zero waste world?

Plastics have secured a prominent position on the global political agenda and more people than ever are getting involved in global movements to address the plastic crisis. The Plastic Atlas is meant to serve this movement, inform decision-makers as well as change-makers and become a transformative tool for change.
