Sebastian Gräfe, Program Director for Foreign & Security Policy and Transatlantic Issues, Heinrich Böll Stiftung North America
The developments in the Arab World and the current budget crises in the West have placed great strain on foreign aid and assistance; the round table will take a closer look at European and American funding for democracy promotion and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as a result.
Executive Director Stephen McInernery will be presenting this year’s Böll/POMED report that offers a detailed look at the U.S. funding and assistance for democracy and governance in the MENA region, and implications for U.S. policy during a turbulent time. As some countries in the Arab world embark on political transitions of various types, while others continue to protest authoritarian rule, it is important to examine U.S. funding for the Middle East and the impact on Washington's relations with the region. The report draws some conclusions regarding the administration's approach to the region more broadly. Mr. McInerney will also comment on the outcome of the U.S. Presidential elections and how it might affect U.S. policy towards the broader region.
Joining McInerney on the panel will be Jean-Louis Ville, Head of Unit for 'Governance, Democracy, Gender, and Human Rights' of EuropeAid, who will offer a European perspective and assessment of the policies, instruments and financial means of the EU.
The discussion will be moderated by Sebastian Gräfe, Program Director for Foreign & Security Policy and Transatlantic Issues at the Heinrich Böll Stiftung North America.
