The next two years will be crucial for the social and political transition in Afghanistan. Great strides have been made over the last decade, but in 2013 and 2014 NATO/ISAF forces will transition out of active roles within Afghanistan, which will require major steps to be taken in the political sphere. These changes will be framed by both presidential and parliamentary elections in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Moreover, these events will precipitate discussions of political settlement, reform, and reconciliation among the country’s conflicting factions, which will also need to be addressed during that time.

To engage the foreign policy community in United States in a discussion about Afghanistan beyond 2014, the Center for American Progress and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung North America have invited three important Afghan civil society leaders to the United States. Among other things, they will address the following questions:
-What impact will the NATO/ISAF drawdown have on security and human rights in Afghanistan?
-What needs to be done to organize free and fair elections?
-What is the role of civil society in the upcoming campaigns?
-How can the international community support a continued positive transition in Afghanistan?

Please join the Heinrich Böll Stiftung North America and the Center for American Progress for a discussion of security, political transitions, and the role of civil society in Afghanistan.
