On the current situation in Afghanistan.
Workshop with Malalai Joya
In this workshop, activist, writer and former politician Malalai Joya will provide her analysis of the current situation in Afghanistan and discuss questions raised by the audience. Malalai Joya has become internationally renowned for her fearlessly outspoken criticism of the current political regime in Afghanistan and the international politics of intervention. From 2005 to 2007 she had held a seat in the National Assembly of Afghanistan, as the youngest parliamentarian ever elected to office. But in 2007, Malalai Joya was suspended for publicly denouncing the presence of war criminals and warlords in the parliament. However, neither this suspension nor the continuous death threats have stopped her from speaking against government corruption, women’s discrimination, the impunity of war criminals, and international occupation.
The workshop will start with a brief input from Malalai Joya, but will then mostly be conducted as a moderated conversation to allow an in-depth discussion guided by the participant’s interests.
The workshop is organised by the Bildungswerk Berlin der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and Sympathisers of the Solidarity Party Afghanistan in Europe. The event has been made possible through funding from the StiftungDeutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin.
