The Center on the U.S. and Europe at Brookings (CUSE) and the Heinrich Böll Stiftung North America are delighted to invite you to an expert roundtable on the role of Germany in Europe and across the globe, featuring Jürgen Trittin, Chairman of the Alliance 90/The Greens in the German Bundestag. Following Mr. Trittin’s presentation, Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff, resident fellow and senior director for strategy at the German Marshall Fund, will offer comments. Carlo Bastasin, CUSE visiting fellow and editorialist for Il Sole-24 Ore, will moderate the discussion.
Germany will elect a new federal parliament on September 22, 2013. In his remarks, Mr. Trittin will focus on Germany’s role in the current public debt crisis in Europe as well as Berlin’s approach toward major foreign policy challenges such as Syria and Afghanistan.
The roundtable will be held under Chatham House rule.
Jürgen Trittin has been Chairman of Alliance 90/The Greens (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) in the German Bundestag since 2009 and a Member of the Bundestag since 1998. From 1998 to 2005, Mr. Trittin served as Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety in Germany and was responsible for the decision to abandon the use of nuclear power.
Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff is a resident fellow and senior director for strategy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States. He leads GMF’s EuroFuture Project which explores the economic, the governance and the geostrategic dimensions of the Eurocrisis from a transatlantic perspective. Formerly, Mr. Kleine-Brockhoff was senior director for policy programs. Before arriving at GMF, he served as the Washington bureau chief of DIE ZEIT, Germany's intellectual weekly.
Carlo Bastasin is a visiting fellow at Brookings with the Center on the United States and Europe and the Global Economy and Development Program. An economist and a journalist, he is a leading commentator for the Italian daily Il Sole-24 Ore and for German newspapers. Between 1998 and 2005 he was deputy editor-in-chief at La Stampa. Bastasin specializes in research on Europe, Germany, and Italy. He is author of several research papers on European political economy.
