Eternal Minorities?
Turkish Politics and the Challenge of Diversity
We are writing to invite you to an off-the-record conversation held jointly by the Center for American Progress and the Heinrich Böll Foundation’s Washington, D.C. office on the topic of minorities in Turkey and its implications for international policy.
Turkey operates in a unique space between Europe and the Middle East and has dramatically expanded its reach in recent years throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. Understanding how Turkey is changing itself and its region is critical to U.S. and European foreign policy. As a member of NATO and an increasingly important regional actor, Turkey’s internal developments have substantial implications for international policy. Ever since the Kemalist revolution, Turkish society is struggling with its treatment of minorities. With the country’s new regional role, the Kurdish conflict and the Armenian question are not domestic issues anymore.
Please join us for lunch and an open discussion on these and other topics dealing with Turkey’s diverse society and its implications for international policy.
The Center for American Progress is pleased to host Joost Lagendijk, senior advisor at the Sabanci University’s Istanbul Policy Center and former member of the European Parliament from 1998 to 2009; and Peter Van Praagh, senior director of the German Marshall Fund as speakers for this event.
Please RSVP to Shiva Mohammadi at shiva@boell.org.
This is an invitation only event.
