The EU Roma Framework and its recently presented National Strategies
BÖLL LUNCH DEBATE
European Council in June 2011, the European Commission defines four main areas in which improvement will have to be made in order to advance social and economic Roma inclusion in Europe: education, employment, healthcare and housing. Moreover, the Commission requested that all EU Member States draft their own national strategies by the end of 2011, since the situation of Roma is different in each and every country, and therefore needs different approaches in Prague than in Madrid. In other words: important progress has been made. Nevertheless, numerous experts and NGOs have criticised the EU Framework for not being comprehensive enough. Also, some national strategies have turned out more ambitious than others; some EU Member States, including Germany, even decided not to publish a national strategy at all. In the meantime, discrimination and violence against Roma continues to intensify, and right-wing politicians all over Europe continue to build upon stereotypes, fears and resentments against Roma to prove their supposed strength, or to win voters. End of April 2012, the Commission published a first assessment of the various national Roma strategies. The following experts will provide their personal analysis on the EU Framework, its national strategies and the Commission's recent reaction.
