European Year For Active Aging

BÖLL TEA BRIEFING

Active aging proposes a better quality of life for our aging population by individuals maintaining good health and remaining active members of society during old age. The European Year of Active Aging in 2012 promotes three areas which hold the potential to improve the quality of life in old age. These are: Independent living, through small changes in environmental and lifestyle to remain healthy in later years; Participation in Society, supporting the contributions the older generation makes by caring others, whether spouses, parents of grandchildren; and Employment, giving experienced workers better chances in the job markets until they can retire on a decent pension. The overall target is to increase the average healthy lifespan of citizens by two years by 2020. The Commission has set up a High Level Steering Group to set the criteria for a Pilot European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Aging. The initiatives from this partnership will be implemented by actors at individual Member State level in industry, health, social care professionals, research, elderly and patient organisations and interest groups. Will the European Commission be able to deliver this aim? Is the addition of two years ambitious enough? What could a long-term strategy look like?
