Feminicide/Femicide in Latin America ¡No more killings of women! Break the silence, stop impunity, demand international responsibility

III. CONFERENCE

Even if symbolically known for cases in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, feminicide or the murder of women for gender reasons is a global problem. The continuous increase of femicide is furthered by the failure of the states mechanisms to prevent, investigate, prosecute and punish the crimes. The European Union (EU) and LA have a wide range of instruments to act together against femicide - nevertheless, to eliminate violence against women and impunity on the grassroots level depends on the political will of each state to develop a strategic approach and make use of the instruments. Will the Spanish presidency and the EU have sufficient political decisiveness to bring this topic on the agenda and to the Conclusions of the EU-LA and Caribbean Summit on May 17/18, 2010? If so, how to make better use of the EU-LAC bilateral and regional relations to promote the necessary legislative and cultural changes, improve the judicial mechanisms and procedures to end the impunity and eradicate feminicides? Can the 2009 Inter-American Court for Human Rights sentence of the trial Campo Algodonero Vs. Mexico enhance the political will?
