Feminicides: A Global Phenomenon !

BÖLL LUNCH DEBATE

Feminicide is on the extreme end of a continuum of anti-female terror that includes a wide variety of verbal and physical abuse. The killing of women is a huge problem especially (but not only) in the patriarchal and unequal societies of the Latin-American continent.

After the awareness-raising in Europe of the occurrence of feminicides in Mexico and Central America – including the adoption of a European Parliament’s Resolution in 2007 – and the awareness-raising in Latin America of the occurrence of similar crimes in other countries of the region, the time has come to move forward.

What relevant steps has the European Commission undertaken to fight feminicides?
What are the difficulties encountered?
Is the experience relevant for other Latin American countries?
What are the relevant aims pursued and steps taken to win the fight against feminicides?
How can the impact of the EP Resolution, the European Commission, and a future Council resolution be enhanced?

Speakers:
- Patricia Maugain, European Commission, DG Relex
- Raul Romeva i Rueda, Member of the European Parliament NN, Latin America
