The urgency to fight climate change and our dependence on fossil fuel is growing. People are strained from high unemployment and the weak economy. Governments are limited by tight budgets, leaving little room for spending.

This event will bring in leading experts from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss strategies for lowering emissions and gaining economic strength despite these constraints. Speakers will address how smart industrial and energy policies provide opportunities for new jobs and more energy security. In addition, they will highlight how rural areas can generate tax revenue and opportunities for clean technologies by pursuing ambitious renewable energy strategies. The event will in particular focus on regions that rely heavily on energy intense industries and coal for power supply, and will emphasize successful approaches to deliver affordable power and reduce carbon emissions.

This is the final event of the two year program The Climate Network, organized by the Heinrich Boell Foundation. It is a program which identifies and promotes solutions for a low-carbon economy through projects in Central Europe and the U.S. Midwest.
