Gender, IFIs and the Global Food Crisis

This panel discussion will highlight the gendered impacts of  investments in agriculture and rural development by International Financial Institutions (IFIs); it will also focus on the policy implications of these investments in the context of the latest global food crisis, which has pushed an additional 44 million people into poverty.
Women, who account for more than two thirds of the world’s poor and the majority of the world’s small-scale and subsistence farmers, bear the brunt of rising food prices and growing food insecurity in developing countries.
Despite women’s critical role on food production and insuring food security, IFIs have neglected to translate gender-mainstreaming policies and plans into significant policy action in rural development and agriculture in developing countries.
