Georgia and the ENP: the road to reform?
LUNCH LECTURE
Since the signing of the ENP Action Plan Georgia has publicly embraced the ENP framework on its path to democracy and Euro-Atlantic integration.
One year on - and in light of recent developments - the time is ripe to assess the government’s actions beyond the strident statements of intent. Whilst acknowledging the progress made by the government, Georgian civil society representatives will this week present a preliminary monitoring report to Brussels decision-makers detailing - by sector - key reforms which are still lacking and which must be enacted to keep the EU-Georgia Action Plan on track.
Arguing for greater attention across 5 key areas – notably including the rule of law and human rights, sustainable development, conflicts, business and energy – our experts propose some key measures which will address the challenges that have emerged during the process of implementing reforms in Georgia following the signing of the Action Plan.
Our experts will also address questions arising from recent developments in Georgia, and outline the crucial, constructive role that can be played by civil society in overcoming the short-term crisis currently besetting the country, and in harnessing the ENP framework for achieving the reform agenda over the longer term.
