Germany and the European Debt Crisis

Roundtable #7 with Gerhard Schick

with Dr. Gerhard Schick, Green Party Representative in the Bundestag

When we convened our Eurozone group for the last time in June around Jean Pisani-Ferry, we were hoping there would be no reason to continue this animated series of expert discussions in the Fall. Given the developments over the summer, however, we seem to have little choice but restart it for another season.

On September 23, the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Brookings Center on the United States and Europe will host Gerhard Schick, Green Party representative in the German Bundestag. The breakfast discussion will address Germany’s position after the Karlsruhe decision, the disappointing results of reforms in Greece and their implications, and Dr. Schick’s views of a credible scenario of exiting the crisis.

Gerhard Schick was first elected to the Bundestag in 2005. He is the Green Parliamentary Group’s spokesperson for financial policy and a member of the Parliament’s Committee on Finance. He also serves on the Federal Executive Council of his party and is the spokesperson for his party’s working group on economic and financial policy. A political economist by trade with a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Freiburg (Germany), Dr. Schick has been one of the most outspoken members of the German parliament in proposing regulatory reforms for the German and European banking and finance sector.

Our colleague Doug Elliott from Economic Studies will be moderating this event.
