Global Greens Conference

Since the 80’s, Green Parties and Social-Environmental Movements from different countries have gathered together, from time to time, with the objective of establishing common strategies to deal with the problems that mankind faces.

It was like that, for example, during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, known as ECO-92, when Greens from all over the world reunited in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to define joint actions.

In 2001, the first Global Greens Congress happened in Canberra, Australia, where Greens from various parts of the globe decided to set up a network that could take responsibility for, amongst other functions, organizing these periodic meetings.

Also in Australia, the Global Green Charter was elaborated and approved, defining principles and political actions that will directed the Greens through the new millennium. In addition to that, it was decided that the following Global Greens would be in the African continent. In 2006, in Nairobi, Kenya, took place the first part of the proposed Global Greens, in parallel to the World Social Forum, reuniting the Young Global Greens, preliminary step to the 2nd Global Greens.

In view of the difficulties to organize the event in Africa, Brazil was chosen by the Coordination to host the Global Greens 2008, which will have the climate change as main subject and will happen from the 1st to 4th May next year, in the city of Sao Paulo.
