International Conference: Beyond The Merely Possible. Transnational Women's Movements Today

Reflecting on current processes of world politics, do transnational women's movements still serve as agents of change? Which social, which systemic and which institutional changes are they currently pushing? Which social practices have they developed as a result of their images and ideas of transformation?

These questions have moved from the core to the margins of research in the field of Gender Studies since the Beijing World Conference on Women. The politics of women's movements are now mostly analyzed under the aspects of effectiveness and the likelihood to influence policy outcomes.

This conference on the other hand seeks to redirect the focus to newer developments, particularly those which do not set their ultimate standards according to what is - politically speaking - merely possible. The debate will be centered on the motives, forms and goals of transnational women's movements, which extend beyond gender mainstreaming, networking- and lobbying strategies. The increasing significance and current means of dealing with difference amongst and between movements are of particular interest. Current political concepts and visions of women's movements are thus set into relation to political practices, which reflect difference within and between women's movements globally.

Three panels aim to set new impulses in the discourses on the transformative potential of women's movements by focusing on:
1. defining the term transnational women's movements in its current dimensions
2. responses by women's movements to current challenges in world politics and
3. highlighting new, provocative and inspiring practices of women's movements.
