Mario Monti's Challenge: The Italian Economy and the Sovereign Debt Crisis
Invitation only!
Following the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi, on November 13 Mario Monti, a former EU Commissioner, accepted Italian President Napolitano’s mandate to form a new government. Monti's appointment followed the parliamentary approval of long-stalled austerity measures considered necessary to avoid further sovereign debt contagion. However, with Italian public debt reaching $2.6 trillion, markets have cautiously responded to the new government. Monti's technocratic team will be charged with implementing unpopular budgetary measures, including public spending cuts, tax increases, and labor market reforms.
To assess the challenges ahead and chance for success for the Monti government, the HBF-Brookings Series on the State of the Eurozone will host an off-the-record discussion with Franco Bruni and Stefano Micossi, two distinguished experts on the Italian and European economies.
Franco Bruni is professor of international monetary economics at the Bocconi University Institute of Economics. He is Vice-President and scientific director of ISPI, Milan's Institute for International Political Studies, member of the European Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee and of the Council of Management of the Société Universitaire Européenne de Recherches Financières, of which he was president from 1998 to 2000.
Stefano Micossi is Director General of ASSONIME (Associazione fra le Società per Azione), a business association and think tank in Rome, as well as a member of Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) board of directors, chairman of the Board of CIR Group, and professor at the College of Europe. Micossi was Director-General for Industry at the European Commission from 1994 to 1998.
This event is invitation only.
