On 27 April 2010, an
international humanitarian caravan trying to break the siege of the autonomous municipality of San Juan Copola was attacked by
paramilitaries. Bety Cariño, of the Centre for Community Support Working
Together (CACTUS), human rights defender, and Jyri Jaakkola, international
observer from Finland,
died and others were hurt in the attack. Human Rights organisations believe that
members of the Unión de Bienestar Social de la Región Triqui
(Ubisort) are responsible for the attack as the defenders had received previous
threatens from them.
How is the Mexican government reacting to the numerous killings in the country? Is there a real political will to fight against impunity and make the rule of law prevail? What should be the role of the EU in the fight against Human Rights violations and the impunity?
Speakers
- David Peña, lawyer of Bety Cariño and Jyri Jaakkola
- Representative of the Embassy of Finland to Belgium
Moderator
- Gaby Küppers, adviser to the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament on external economic relations
Honorary guests: Eeva-Leena and Raimo Jaakkola, parents of Jyri Jaakkola.
This event is organised in co-operation with CIFCA and Amnesty International and will be held in Spanish and English with simultaneous interpretation.
