In Afghanistan, more than half of local conflicts are driven by competition for natural resources. At the same time, natural resources are a main source of state revenues. In the context of the withdrawal of ISAF/NATO forces and decreasing Western donor aid, establishing a pragmatic and sensible approach to managing natural resources proves will be vital. Renard Sexton, a Visiting Scholar with the Program on Crisis, Conflict, and Cooperation at CSIS, will discuss his research on seven cases of local conflicts throughout Afghanistan driven or exacerbated by issues surrounding natural resources. We hope you can join us for this expert roundtable.
