New Strategies for a New Administration: Development Beyond ODA

Choate Room @ the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
1779 Massachusetts Avenue NW Washington, DC 20036

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On behalf of New Rules for Global Finance and the Heinrich Boell Foundation, it is our pleasure to invite you to the Seminar `New Strategies for a New Administration: Development Beyond ODA.`

The seminar will address the question: `What should be the development strategy for the new Obama administration?` Conventional strategies have revolved around Official Development Assistance (ODA), but we now know that inclusive and sustainable development require more. The Obama administration in its second term has the opportunity to bolster sustainable global development through comprehensive approaches, including:
-Promoting trade and investmentagreements that support development;
-Focusing on the role of tax in development (improving tax administration capacity, while reforming US domestic laws);
-Reducing volatility in commodity markets (regulating food and fuel derivatives); and
-Combating illicit financial flows.

This Seminar will convene experts and practitioners to discuss these alternatives. In addition, we are inviting representatives from emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) to comment on these new challenges in development.

Panelists:
-Karen Cavanaugh, Director for the Office of Health Systems, USAID
-Ramon Espinel, Senior Advisor from Ecuador to the Executive Director (Brazil), International Monetary Fund
-Heather Lowe, Legal Counsel and Director of Government Affairs, Global Financial Integrity
-Saule Omarova, Assistant Professor of Law, UNC School of Law
-Robert Stumberg, Director, Harrison Institute for Public Law, Professor of Law, Georgetown University

Moderator: Jo Marie Griesgraber, Executive Director, New Rules for Global Finance

We hope you can join us for this important discussion. To RSVP, email  ncoplin@new-rules.org.
