Northern Ireland after Brexit – we have a look at it!

John Barry - Professor for History, Politics and International Relations von der Queens University in Belfast

Moderation: Linda Heitmann - Vorstandsmitglied der Heinrich Böll Stiftung Hamburg

Die Veranstaltung findet auf Englisch statt!

Since the beginning of 2021 Brexit is finally completed – Great Britain is no longer member of the European Union and the cooperation is from now on based in the rules of the so called „Deal“.But what does that mean concretely? In which way does the everyday life of people living in Great Britain change now? And who can be called a winner, who seems to be a looser under the new rules?

We want to have a closer look at the opinions and positions in Northern Ireland which has a very special role in the whole process. To avoid a new „hard border“ between Ireland an Northern Ireland was one very important target in the whole Brexit process. Many people in Europe also observe what is happening in Scotland where many citizens would like to start a new independence-process of their country to re-enter the European Union. Is that a discussion in Northern Ireland as well? And what does it it mean for the peace process in a country which is deeply divided between Unionists and Republicans?

We talk about all these questions on

Terry Reintke - member of the European parliament for the Green Party

John Barry - Professor for History, Politic and International Relations at Queen‘s University Belfast

Moderation: Linda Heitmann - Heinrich Böll Foundation Hamburg
