Ökologien des Krieges und des Widerstands im Irak und Libanon

Diese Podiumsdiskussion nimmt uns mit in den Südirak in die von der Erdöl-Förderung geschädigten als auch in die vom Krieg betroffenen Gebiete des Südlibanon. „Ökologien des Krieges“ untersucht die „Naturalisierung von Krieg“ – wie Krieg nicht nur normal, sondern auch teil der natürlichen Umwelt wird. Das südliche Grenzland des Libanon ist in einen anhaltenden Kriegszustand verstrickt, der zyklisch ausbricht, stört, zerstört, (wieder)aufbaut. Erdöl-Förderung produziert im Irak eine Umgebung, die das natürliche Umfeld der ansässigen indigenen Bevölkerung zerstört. Beide Kontexte haben eine Lebensweise erzeugt, in der Menschen weiterhin überleben. In dieser Diskussion wollen wir uns die gewaltvollen Gemeinsamkeiten von Krieg und extrakivistischen Politiken anschauen. Welche Formen von Widerstand produzieren diese Ökologien? Wie sind die lokalen Politiken mit Fragen einer globalen (Kriegs)Ökonomie des Kapitalismus verbunden?

Wir wollen diskutieren, welche Möglichkeiten es für Widerstand gibt und wie diese Fragen in den Diskurs der globalen Klimagerechtigkeitsbewegung eingeschrieben werden können.

Gäste:
Munira Khayyat ist Anthropologin, deren Forschung sich um das Leben im Krieg, intime Genealogien des Imperiums und Theorien aus dem Süden dreht. Ihr erstes Buch, „A Landscape of War: Ecologies of Resistance and Survival in South Lebanon“ (University of California Press 2022), untersucht widerstandsfähige Ökologien in einer Welt des ewigen Krieges entlang der südlichen Grenze des Libanon zu Israel.
Taif Alkhudary ist Politikwissenschaftlerin und Menschenrechtsexpertin mit dem Fokus Irak. Sie hat zu den den Rechten von Frauen und Mädchen geforscht, Fällen von Folter, willkürlicher Inhaftierung und außergerichtlichen Tötungen in der Golfregion und dem Irak. Sie hat einen BA in Kunstgeschichte von der UCL und einen MSc in Menschenrechten von der LSE. Derzeit promoviert sie zum Effekt von Erdölförderung im Südirak.

Ecologies of war and resistance in Iraq and Lebanon: what world is produced by permanent war and oil production?

This panel discussion takes us to southern Iraq, to the areas of damaged by oil production as well as to the areas of southern Lebanon affected by the war. "Ecologies of War" examines the "naturalization of war" – how war becomes not only normal, but also part of the natural environment. Lebanon's southern borderland is entangled in a prolonged state of war that cyclically erupts, disrupts, destroys, (re)builds. Oil production in Iraq produces an environment that destroys the natural environment of the local indigenous population. Both contexts have created a way of life in which people continue to survive. In this discussion, we want to look at the violent commonalities between war and extraivist policies. What forms of resistance do these ecologies produce? How are local policies connected to questions of a global (war) economy of capitalism? 
We want to discuss what possibilities there are for resistance and how these questions can be inscribed in the discourse of the global climate justice movement.

Munira Khayyat – Anthropologist whose research revolves around life in war, intimate genealogies of empire, and theories from the South. Her first book, "A Landscape of War: Ecologies of Resistance and Survival in South Lebanon" (University of California Press 2022), explores resilient ecologies in a world of perpetual war along Lebanon's southern border with Israel.
Taif Alkhoudary is a political scientist and human rights expert with a focus on Iraq. She has researched the rights of women and girls, cases of torture, arbitrary detention and extrajudicial killings in the Gulf region and Iraq. She holds a BA in Art History from UCL and an MSc in Human Rights from LSE. She is currently working on her doctorate on the effect of oil production in southern Iraq.
