PhD Supervision in Gender Studies. Course for PhD supervisors, Sweden

Description:
The course will establish a forum for reflection on PhD supervision with a focus on the field of Gender Studies, understood in a broad sense and with an openness towards the difference and diversity within the field. The course welcomes supervisors who are experienced in supervising PhD students who apply a gender perspective within the framework of disciplines, as well as supervisors who supervise interdisciplinary Gender Studies projects.

Moreover, researchers who do not have particular experiences from supervision of disciplinary or
interdisciplinary Gender Studies projects, but who are interested in
developing skills in PhD supervision in this direction are also most welcome. The aim is to gather a group with different national and academic backgrounds, but with a shared interest in reflections on and development of Gender Studies PhD training within, between and across disciplines.

Within this overall frame of an interest in Gender Studies PhD training,
the course will give special attention to the following questions:
- How can supervisors help PhD students improve their writing skills and reflect on relationships between writing and thinking?
- How to make the supervision process a dialogic and mutually reflexive learning experience?
- How to handle the dilemmas of supervision in a neoliberal university
environment?
- Can we talk of feminist values in PhD research training, and if yes,
what do they imply?

The course will be based on lectures, written papers by participants, and workshop sessions, where participants will be given ample space to present and jointly reflect on supervision experiences and skills, as well as try-out ideas about supervision within the framework of, among others, writing exercises, forum theatre and analysis of case studies.
