Promises of the G20 Process: Prospects for Transparency and Accountability

There are 173 countries that are not members of the G20.  These countries and many sectors of society (business, labor, academics/think-tanks, youth, and civil society) are eager to learn about the G20 agenda and processes, and to provide their input. We will ask about the effectiveness of participation by these groups.  Secondly, this seminar will focus on G20 accountability. As heads of State or Government, the G20 Leaders are first answerable to the citizens, the electorates of their respective countries.  However, in an era of rolling financial crises, they have declared themselves the “premier forum for international economic cooperation” with a remit that encompasses not only crisis prevention (through sound oversight and regulation), but also economic stability, strong, sustainable growth, and job creation. What is the G20’s record on delivering on its promises? And who holds the G20 accountable to these promises?
