Roundtable on the Future of Progressive Politics in Germany

Please join the Heinrich Boell Stiftung North America and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies for a discussion on the future of progressive politics in Germany with Steffi Lemke, the Secretary General of Bündnis 90/the Green Party and Rudi Hoogvliet, Press Secretary of Winfried Kretschmann, the Green Party’s first Minister-President.

Light refreshments will be served.

The event will be in German only.

Europe’s political landscape is undergoing considerable upheaval. Voters continue to punish parties in government and populist parties on both ends of the political spectrum are gaining strength. In Germany, the upstart Pirate Party has challenged the established party system. Voters are unhappy with the mainstream parties. This voter resentment transcends party lines, affecting both progressive and conservative incumbents.

The discussion will touch on the following questions: What are the reasons for this electoral protest? Are voters rejecting only the governing parties or the liberal-democratic and capitalistic systems as a whole? Can parties reach voters in the midst of an economic crisis that seemed to have been caused by the political elite of the governing parties? How are the Greens reacting to the increased splintering of the progressive political field?
