In Search of a Lasting Strategy: A Debriefing of the EU Summit Meeting
HBF-Brookings Roundtable Series on the State of the Eurozone. Roundtable #8
On October 23, the leaders of the 27 European Union countries will convene for meetings of the ECOFIN Council and the Eurogroup. At the summit, European Council President Herman van Rompuy is expected to present a set of reform proposals for the governance of the Eurogroup. He will also likely recommend more urgent measures to respond to the sovereign debt crisis and the lingering downturn that now threatens even the strongest EU economies. The need for bank recapitalization—called for by German Chancellor Merkel this week and dramatically highlighted by the Dexia episode and Italy’s credit downgrading—is another issue expected to be discussed at the meetings.
To assess the proceedings of the summit and its consequences, the HBF-Brookings Roundtable Series on the State of the Eurozone will continue with an off-the-record debriefing by Antonio de Lecea, Minister of Economic and Financial Affairs at the EU Delegation to the U.S.
Antonio de Lecea was formerly Director for International Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission and was Economic Advisor in the private office of Romano Prodi while he served as European Commission President.
This event is invitation only.
