SHALE GAS IN EUROPE - WHAT FOR?

BÖLL LUNCH DEBATE

Shale gas production in Europe is years away, the race for test drillings and exploration licences is underway.
Central Eastern Europe is betting on shale gas to decrease its dependency on Russia and to meet its climate targets. Shale gas exploitation, especially hydraulic fracturing and its consequences on the environment, public health and safety are a major concern of civil society and water utilities.
In 2010 23% of the US natural gas production was shale gas extraction. What lessons are to be learned from the US? In Europe, what chances, what challenges and what benefits will shale gas bring for whom?
