From a Strategic Ally to an Independent Regional Power - What Role for Turkey?

Invitation only!

Off-the-Record Luncheon Roundtable Discussion
with Ralf Fücks, Co-President of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung, and
Brian Katulis, Center for American Progress, Senior Fellow

The Heinrich Böll Stiftung North America is organizing an off-the-record luncheon discussion about Turkey's role and relations with countries in the Eastern Mediterranean. From a European perspective, Ralf Fücks will address the question of whether Turkey's EU accession prospects are still relevant. Mr. Fücks and Brian Katulis will discuss Turkey's potential to be a model for emerging democracies in Arab countries. Can Turkey sustain its role as mediator? What are the common or different approaches toward Turkey taken by the Europeans and the Americans? How will the country’s increasing tensions with its Kurdish population play out? What are the main challenges Turkey and other actors in the region are confronted with? Mr. Fücks will also share his insights from a recent trip to Turkey and the Turkish-Syrian border. As a background, you may also read this article on recent allegations made by Prime Minister Erdogan against the German political foundations’ activities in Turkey.

This event is invitation only.
