Three Hundred Thousand Clean Energy Jobs
Lessons Learned from the German Success Story of Low Carbon Growth
With an unemployment rate of more than 9%, there is a strong need for immediate job creation and sound economic recovery in the US. One of the fields with the strongest potential for new jobs is the clean energy sector. Midwestern states, such as Michigan, Minnesota and Ohio have already created thousands of new jobs in the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of solar and wind energy. But more needs to be done to attract clean energy investors. In Germany, more than 300,000 jobs have been created in this sector, ranging from clean energy manufacturing to rural energy production by farmers.
This session will discuss how smart policies and private investments can build-up a clean energy economy and jumpstart job creation in the US immediately: What actions have countries like Germany taken towards clean energies? What incentives are needed to attract private investment in this growing sector? How can the local benefits of clean energy production be maximized? How can rural and manufacturing areas profit from clean energy? How can states of the U.S. Midwest secure jobs in the clean energy economy of the future?
A new policy report entitled `Clean Energy Jobs for the U.S. Midwest – Lessons Learned from the German Success Story of Low Carbon Growth` will be released. In the report author and Midwest Green Jobs Fellow, Christine Wörlen, analyzes lessons learned from the German success story of low carbon growth and suggests policy recommendations for key states in the U.S. Midwest.
