Ukraine - Environmental policies in times of crisis

Ukraine means borderland. After gaining independence from the Soviet Union, Ukraine has become one of the largest states in Europe, which is still struggling for existence and territorial integrity. Being the borderland between two blocks that unfortunately seem to arise (again), Ukraine has suffered from EU and Russian decisions and actions, and it is captured in armed conflicts and war for various years. How have the outcomes of the Euromaidan as well as the conflicts influenced the development of the country? What are the consequences in natural environmental management? How important are transboundary and transnational cooperation in environment and development for building a sustainable development?

Visiting scientists from Ukrainian National Forestry University (UNFU), Lviv, and the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, Transcarpathia on the border to Romania, will discuss these questions and their perspectives on transformation in Ukraine with Pierre Ibisch.

Our guests are the professors Olena Vrublevska, Alexander Adamovsky, Andriy Golovko with the UNFU Institute of Ecological Economics and Management, and Vasyl Pokynchereda, senior scientist of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. Ukrainian National Forestry University’s history goes back to the 19th century and is HNEE’s homologue in Ukraine. It comprises the Institute of Ecological Economics and six faculties.

Prof. Dr. Pierre Ibisch ist Direktor des Zentrums für Ökonik und Ökosystemmanagement an der Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde. Der Professor für Naturschutz hat eine der ersten Forschungsprofessuren der Hochschule inne und arbeitet zu "Ökosystembasierte nachhaltige Entwicklung".
