Panel 1 - Getting out of the downturn while ensuring the future: US and European macroeconomic dilemmas
Both the U.S. and Europe have to balance competing pressures to stimulate the economy and address unemployment while maintaining a commitment to fiscal sustainability in the long term. What is the best balance between these two objectives, and how credible are European and American assurances to reduce the long-term deficits? What are the implications for global rebalancing, and is there a convergent Transatlantic interest in getting China to provide the extra demand?
Introduction: Carlo Cottarelli (IMF) and Don Kohn (Brookings)
11:00am – 12:30pm
Panel 2 - Enough to prevent the next crisis? An assessment of the state of financial regulation reform in Europe and the U.S.
In an effort to address core problems that led to the global economic crisis and to prevent future economic failures, the United States and the EU have started to enact several financial regulatory reform measures. Leaders on both sides of the Atlantic assert that the reform provisions allow for better monitoring and greater capacity to respond to risks across the financial system, but has enough been done to prevent another crisis? Where are the transparency and regulatory gaps in the U.S.? In Europe? What is the status of U.S.-European coordination? Where does progress rely on greater coordination?
Introduction: Doug Elliott (Brookings) and NicolasVéron (Bruegel / PIIE)
