Democracy is under pressure in both Europe and Latin America. In both regions, right-libertarian and ultra-right-wing actors are increasingly gaining support and political influence. In Argentina, Javier Milei, a self-proclaimed ‘anarcho-capitalist’, has been in power since December 2023, exacerbating a severe socio-economic crisis with radical austerity policies and the dismantling of state structures. His reforms, accompanied by social impoverishment and attacks on the democratic consensus, have caused a massive recession, high unemployment and poverty. Despite initial support from libertarian economists, there is increasing scepticism about his economic policies and the country's ability to manage its debt.

As political foundations, we would therefore like to discuss the state of democracy and human rights in Argentina one year after Milei took office with representatives from politics, civil society and academia.
