Literacy and Gender

International LitCam Conference 2013

The 8th LitCam Conference focuses on »Literacy and Gender« and is presented in partnership with KfW Stiftung and UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning.

Literacy and basic education are fundamental for so many aspects of social, political and economic life. But today what are the chances of an equal education for all? What are the chances to be well-educated as a girl or a boy in different countries?

The conference will concentrate on the lack of access to education for girls and women in many developing countries and the problems of boys’ underachievement in schools in many developed countries. Keynotes, strategic presentations and practical examples will present the current situation in different countries and will discuss the ways to improve the situation. The final part of the first conference day will be about the role of literature for literacy and gender. It will also be the kick-off for a project supporting young writers funded by KfW Stiftung. The get-together gives the participants the chance to exchange their experience. The workshops on the following day deepen the results of the first conference day.

Participants will get the chance to discuss with experts from politics and science, and to learn about the work of NGOs from Brazil, the UK, Pakistan, France, Senegal, Egypt and the US. Aloizio Mercadente, Brazilian Minister of Education, will open the conference. Keynote Speaker will be the popular American Sociologist and specialist in Gender Studies, Dr. Michael Kimmel.
