When it comes to migration, certain topics are discussed at length, while others are largely ignored. We often hear about upper limits, demarcation and integration. But when it comes to cultures in the diaspora, queer people fleeing their homes, love and sexuality in the context of migration, and many other personal stories, reasons for fleeing and everyday exclusion, Europe falls silent. Sulaiman Addonia has written about precisely these issues in his books ‘Silence is my mother tongue’, ‘The consequences of love’ and ‘The Seers’.

More about Sulaiman Addonia

Born in Eritrea, Sulaiman Addonia spent several years of his childhood in a refugee camp in Sudan and has been living in London since 1990. His first novel, The Consequences of Love, shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, was translated into more than 20 languages. The author currently lives in Brussels, where he has launched a creative writing academy for refugees and asylum seekers as well as the Asmara-Addis Literary Festival in Exile (AALFIE). In 2022, the festival was selected as one of the 40 best literary festivals in the world. In 2021, Addonia was awarded Belgium's Golden Afro Artistic Award for Literature.

Wenn es um Migration geht, werden bestimmte Themen ausführlich diskutiert, während andere weitgehend ignoriert werden. Wir hören oft von Obergrenzen, Abgrenzung und Integration. Aber wenn es um Kulturen in der Diaspora, queere Menschen, die aus ihrer Heimat fliehen, Liebe und Sexualität im Kontext der Migration und viele andere persönliche Geschichten, Fluchtgründe und alltägliche Ausgrenzung geht, schweigt Europa. Sulaiman Addonia hat genau über diese Themen in seinen Büchern „Silence is my mother tongue“, „The consequences of love“ und „The Seers“ geschrieben.

In Eritrea geboren, verbrachte der Autor mehrere Jahre seiner Kindheit in einem Flüchtlingslager im Sudan und lebt seit 1990 in London. Sein erster Roman, "The Consequences of Love", stand auf der Shortlist für den Commonwealth Writers' Prize und wurde in mehr als 20 Sprachen übersetzt.
